Open Letter to Mr. Recep Tayyip Erduğan
The Prime Minister of Turkey

July 15, 2009

Dear Mr. Recep Tayyip Erduğan
The Prime Minister of Turkey:

A few hours after the 2009 presidential election on June 12, 2009, a brutal coup d’etat against the Iranian Civil Rights Movement took place in our country. Since then, the entire nation has actively become involved in a magnificent resistance against hardliners. In a non-violent, peaceful, yet brave manner, people of Iran exceedingly continue to express their firm resolution in establishing democracy, freedom and civil rights in their country.

In their legitimate quest for democracy, Iranians hoped to obtain political and humanistic support of the Turkish people, and particularly, yours as the Prime Minister of Turkey. However, quite unexpectedly, a few days after the coup d'etat of June 18th, the government of Turkey hastened the recognition of the fraudulent presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadi Nejad. Such a political gesture from the part of Turkey broke the hearts of the Iranian nation and empowered the oppressors.

At the current definitive moment of history, the Iranians’ public opinion is still shocked by your government’s indifference toward apparent violation of human rights and bloodshed in Iran, given the fact that Turkey has an active record of expressing humanistic concerns for people of Gaza, and recently, for the Turk population of China.

Can discriminating between different nations be justified when it comes to the universal terms of the Human Rights Declaration?

Is the humanity dividable to some nations with higher degrees of human dignity and some with lower ones?

In the future, will the collective consciousness of the humanity forgive the acts of complacency with the criminal suppressors of the peaceful Civil Rights Movement in Iran?

Since the mid-nineteen century, Iran and Turkey have been paving a common path toward modernization, modernity and democracy. The Iranian and Turkish nations, in their brave fights for independence, freedom, and emancipation from dictatorship and religious fanaticism, have experienced bitter moments, and embraced historical victories as well. In this long journey of freedom, especially during the Iranian Constitutional Movement of early 20th Century, Istanbul became a true haven for the Iranian intellectuals and leaders of the Constitutional Movement. Turkish liberal-minded political figures ardently supported the Iran’s progressive movement.

During the past month, more than one million people, from all walks of life, and from different ethnic and religious backgrounds have peacefully protested in the streets of Iran to obtain their legitimate rights for a democratic presidential election. Iranian nation has become the messenger of universal love.

The entire world is now aware that the notorious executors of protestors in Iran are neither religious, nor faithful to the civil laws; they are neither Iranian, nor Muslim. They are a handful of fascists and criminal mobs, that have jeopardized the economical, cultural, and human resources of the country for the sake of their defiled will to unlimited power.

Mr. Recep Tayyip Erduğan,

People of Iran still hope that the government of Turkey will soon clear its boundaries with the enemies of democracy in Iran, and like the old age of Constitution, will express solidarity with the current Civil Rights Movement in Iran.

Respectfully,

Mohammad Arassi
