Protesting against “President” Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on the occasion of his visit to the United Nations
September 23, 2009
Dear Mr. Ban Ki-moon,
Secretary-General of the United Nations,
We are gathered here in Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza before the historic United Nations building to condemn the current repressive dictatorship in Iran and voice our support for the democratic aspirations of the Iranian people.
During the recent presidential elections in Iran, which are well-known to have been riddled with widespread vote-rigging and fraud, Mr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was falsely declared the winner. It is sad to admit there are no free and fair elections in Iran, and there have not been for many years. Only candidates approved by Iran’s Guardian Council can run for the office of presidency. This was not a fair election, and Mr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is not the elected representative of the people.
Many freedoms we take for granted throughout the Iranian diaspora – freedom of expression, of political parties, freedom of the press and assembly – are all sadly missing from our home country. Nonetheless, despite the oppressive, anti-democratic measures and restrictions now widespread in Iran, the Iranian people themselves courageously, vigorously and peacefully participated in the recent elections to press ahead with their demands for greater freedoms, both in the political system and in society at large. And in return, they were robbed of their votes, robbed of their hopes of a freer society, robbed of their chance to bring real change to our homeland.
Against this heroic, peaceful resistance, the ruling regime has unleashed unremitting violence, with continuing mass arrests, torture, rape of political prisoners both male and female, forced confessions, and shameful Stalinist show trials, not to mention outright killings of people in the streets and the prisons.
We wish to relay to you two, most important messages in the name of the Iranian people:
(1) Mr. Ahmadinejad is not the legitimate representative of the Iranian people. Mr. Ahmadinejad’s actions, in fact, should be judged as nothing less than crimes against humanity.
(2) We urgently ask you to appoint and dispatch a Special Rapporteur for human rights in Iran. We are deeply concerned about the condition of the political prisoners in Iran. Urgent action must be taken to stop the violence, the killings, torture and rape, and to hasten the release of all political prisoners.
We hope that you would apply all the capacities of your office to pressure the Iranian government to respect the UN Charter, the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and all other treaties and conventions to which the Islamic Republic is a signatory. Those suffering in prisons in Iran hope that respected and authoritative world bodies – most importantly, the UN – should withhold legitimacy from a government that violates, so violently and so cruelly, the most basic of human rights. We express our gratitude for your attention to the future of Iran and of the democratic aspirations of its people.
