امروز می‌خواهم بهترین آرزوهای خود را به همه‌ی کسانی که نوروز را در سرتاسر جهان جشن می‌گیرند تقدیم کنم. این جشن، هم یک آیین باستانی و هم زمانی برای بازآفرینی است و امیدوارم که شما از این فرصت ویژه‌ی سال برای بودن در جمع دوستان و خانواده بهره گیرید.

من بویژه می‌خواهم به طور مستقیم با مردم و رهبران جمهوری اسلامی ایران صحبت کنم.

نوروز تنها بخشی از فرهنگ نام آور شماست. هنر، موسیقی، ادبیات و نوآوری شما جهان را به دنیایی زیباتر و بهتر تبدیل کرده است. اینجا، در ایالات متحده، جامعه خود ما هم در پرتو سهمی که آمریکاییان ایرانی تبار ادا کرده‌اند پربارتر شده است. ما از تمدن بزرگ شما آگاهیم. دستاوردهای شما احترام ایالات متحده و جهان را برانگیخته است.

برای مدتی نزدیک به سه دهه روابط میان دو کشور تیره و تار بوده است. ولی این جشن، یاد آوری برای نقاط مشترک بشریت است که همه ما را به هم پیوند می‌دهد. از بسیاری جهات شما نیز مانند ما سال نو خود را همانگونه برگزار می‌کنید که ما جشن می‌گیریم. با گردآمدن با دوستان و افراد خانواده، مبادله‌‌ی هدایا و داستانها و نگاه به آینده، با احساس تازه‌ای از امیدواری.

در بطن این جشن‌ها، نویدی برای یک روز بهتر، امیدی برای فرزندان ما، امنیت برای خانواده‌های ما، پیشرفت برای جوامع ما و آشتی میان ملتها نهفته است. اینها امیدواریهای مشترکند. اینها رویاهای مشترکند.

پس این فصلی برای آغازی نو است. من میل دارم به روشنی با رهبران ایران سخن بگویم.

ما اختلافاتی جدی داریم که با گذشت زمان بر آنها افزوده شده است. دولت من اکنون به دیپلماسی متعهد است که طیف کاملی از مسائلی را که پیش روی ماست مورد بررسی قرار می‌دهد و در صدد ایجاد یک پیوند سازنده میان ایالات متحده، ایران و جامعه‌ی جهانی است. این فرایند با تهدید به پیش نمی‌رود. به جای آن ما خواستار برقراری ارتباطی صادقانه و مبتنی بر احترام متقابل هستیم.

شما نیز در برابر خود انتخابی دارید. ایالات متحده مایل است که جمهوری اسلامی ایران بر جایگاه راستین خود در جامعه‌ی بین‌الملل قرار بگیرد. شما دارای چنین حقی هستید – اما این حق با مسئولیت‌های واقعی همراه است و به این جایگاه نه از راه ترور یا به مدد جنگ افزار، بلکه از طریق اقدامات مسالمت‌آمیز که نشان دهنده‌ی بزرگی حقیقی ملت و تمدن ایران است می‌توان دست یافت. و معیار سنجش این بزرگی داشتن توانایی برای ویران کردن نیست، نشان دادن توانایی شما برای ساختن و آفریدن است.

بنا براین، به مناسبت فرارسیدن سال نو شما، مایلم شما، مردم و رهبران ایران بدانید که ما در جستجوی چگونه آینده‌ای هستیم. این آینده‌ای است همراه با مبادلات تجدید شده میان مردم ما، و فرصت‌های بزرگتری برای مشارکت و بازرگانی. این آینده‌ای است که در آن اختلافات دیرین برطرف شده‌اند، آینده‌ای که در آن شما و همسایگانتان و جهان در بعد وسیع‌تر می‌توانیم همه در صلح و امنیت بهتری زندگی کنیم.

من می‌دانم که این منظور به آسانی تحقق‌پذیر نیست. کسانی هستند که اصرار دارند ما را بر اساس اختلافاتی که داریم معرفی کنند. اما شایسته است کلماتی را که سالیانی پیش به وسیله‌‌ی سعدی نگاشته شده به خاطر آوریم:

بنی آدم اعضای یکدیگرند / که در آفرینش ز یک گوهرند

فرارسیدن یک فصل نو، این انسانیت گرانبها را که همه‌ی ما در آن مشترکیم به ما یاد آوری می‌کند. یکبار دیگر به این روح متعالی توسل جسته و نوید آغازی دوباره را بجوییم.

سپاسگزارم. هر روزتان نوروز، نوروزتان پیروز.

Today, I want to extend my very best wishes to all who are celebrating Nowruz around the world. This holiday is both an ancient ritual and a moment of renewal, and I hope that you enjoy this special time of year with friends and family.

In particular, I would like to speak directly to the people and leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Nowruz is just one part of your great and celebrated culture. Over many centuries, your art, music, literature and innovation have made the world a better and more beautiful place. Here in the United States, our own communities have been enhanced by the contributions of Iranian-Americans. We know that you are a great civilization, and your accomplishments have earned the respect of the United States and the world.

For nearly three decades, relations between our nations have been strained. But at this holiday, we are reminded of the common humanity that binds us together. Indeed, you will be celebrating your New Year in much the same way that we Americans mark our holidays – by gathering with family and friends, exchanging gifts and stories, and looking to the future with a renewed sense of hope.

Within these celebrations lies the promise of a new day – the promise of opportunity for our children; security for our families; progress for our communities; and peace between nations. Those are shared hopes. Those are common dreams.

So in this season of new beginnings, I would like to speak clearly to Iran’s leaders.

We have serious differences that have grown over time. My Administration is now committed to diplomacy that addresses the full range of issues before us, and to pursuing constructive ties among the United States, Iran, and the international community. This process will not be advanced by threats. We seek, instead, engagement that is honest and grounded in mutual respect.

You, too, have a choice. The United States wants the Islamic Republic of Iran to take its rightful place in the community of nations. You have that right – but it comes with real responsibilities. And that place cannot be reached through terror or arms, but rather through peaceful actions that demonstrate the true greatness of the Iranian people and civilization – and the measure of that greatness is not the capacity to destroy, it is your demonstrated ability to build and create.

So on the occasion of your New Year, I want you, the people and leaders of Iran, to understand the future that we seek. It is a future with renewed exchanges among our people, and greater opportunities for partnership and commerce. It is a future where the old divisions are overcome – where you, and all of your neighbors and the wider world can live in greater peace and security.

I know that this won’t be reached easily. There are those who will insist that we be defined by our differences. But let us remember the words that were written by the poet Saadi (SAH-dee) so many years ago: “The children of Adam are limbs to each other, having been created of one essence.”

With the coming of a new season, we are reminded of this precious humanity that we all share. And we can once again call upon this spirit as we seek the promise of a new beginning.
